The Rules of Engagement: Technology!

the rules of engagement

Conduct and preparation are important for the success of any training program. Doing it virtually requires an even stronger dedication to due diligence! To make this the best experience for yourself - and to ensure that the experiences of others are not impeded - please take a moment to review some the Rules of Engagement below.

Prepare! Please read the emails that are sent to you, and take some time to go through the course in order to ensure you have done all that you can to ready yourself for the limited time we have for "live" training.

Testing, testing, 1-2-3: Take some time to review the space where you will be doing the training. Is it quiet? Do you have high-quality earbuds or headphones? Is your audio quality high? Where is your computer placed and where do you show up on camera? How is the lighting in your space? Are you comfortable using Zoom?

Serious up-top; party down-below. Dressing for Zoom meetings is like sporting a clothes mullet! Please plan on dressing as if you would for a face-to-face training - at least up-top! If you want to be casual and ultra-comfy in your sweatpants or PJ bottoms, that is up to you, but to be respectful of the trainers, the other participants and the training itself, please plan on dressing as if you were going to appear in court. (But no one will know if you're rockin' bunny slippers!)

Help is on the way. During the training, Libby will be lurking in the background and will do whatever she can to help in case of technology snafus. You can reach her via the chat function or via email if things go horribly awry.

Training Dos & Don'ts:
During a plenary:
  • Everyone except for one trainer will be muted, unless and until you have a question. Use the "raise hand" feature to be called upon. When that happens you can "open" your microphone.
  • Everyone's camera should be on.
  • Use "Speaker View" to focus on the speaker, or "Gallery View" to take in the room.
During training:
  • Cameras and microphones OFF for everyone except for the trainers and the person whose turn it is.
  • When it is your turn, make sure your camera AND microphone are ON.
  • When you are finished, turn OFF both your camera AND your microphone.
  • When it is not your turn, even though your camera and microphone are OFF, please PAY ATTENTION!
  • The trainers are in charge of determining breaks and whether or not to entertain questions. Generally, if everyone has performed and there is time left, it is used for Q&A.
  • We are all adults, you can manage your own bio needs and don't have to wait for a sanctioned break, but please plan on PAYING ATTENTION otherwise: do not check email, leave the room or take a nap.
Breathe. There will inevitably be glitches and such. That is okay - this training is "risk-free" and you shouldn't be so nervous so as not to notice the experience and really "hear" what the trainers are telling you. Besides, they are all very nice people! You will be amazed at what they can accomplish and do for you. Get excited...it's going to be fun!

Please be sure to read the document linked below to make the most of the experience and to avoid common mistakes and problems.
