SFIA 138: An Overview of Load Bearing Cold-Formed Steel Framing (Live Webinar)

Description

Course Description
Cold-formed steel framing is considered a specialty design and is often delegated by the architect and structural engineer of record to be designed by the panelizer or framer’s engineer. For some load bearing CFS structures, which can rise ten or more stories in the air, this may mean everything above the foundation is delegated to a later designer! While there are clear advantages to this workflow, significant conflicts and challenges can arise if the original design team does not have a baseline familiarity with the design and installation of CFS framing. This presentation is intended to provide a starting point for that familiarity with load bearing cold-formed steel wall, floor, and roof systems. The presentation will address the basics of framing design, detailing, assembly, and installation, with an eye toward common issues to be avoided that reduce RFIs and change orders later in construction.
Learning objectives
  1. Understand the assembly issues for cold-formed steel (CFS) wall panels.
  2. Become familiar with common load bearing details that are problematic for CFS construction.
  3. Acquire fundamental knowledge about CFS Floor/Roof/Ceiling (F/R/C) systems.
  4. Provide proper design criteria and specifications when delegating load bearing CFS design.
  5. Learn best practices for integration with other construction materials and systems.

  • Zane Clark, P.E., S.E.

Zane is a consulting engineer with extensive experience in the design of mid-rise load bearing cold-formed steel structures and a deep familiarity with the codes, specifications, and framing standards applicable to these buildings. Having consulted for both contractors and architects, he brings to the table solutions that work for both. He has been a speaker for the Cold-Formed Steel Engineers Institute (CFSEI) Expo and webinars and is active with the ASCE/SEI Committee on Cold-Formed Steel Members, which is producing a design guide for CFS structures.
