G23 Richards Collection Visual Resources Survey and Digitization Project

Description

This work details a VRAF grant devoted to surveying a 500,000+ item visual resource archive, in order to more accurately document Tacoma's Black, Asian and Native American history. The process involved cultural analytics and data visualization to direct areas of focus, as well as processing of unconventional film formats and practicing ethical description and community collaboration. This resulted in a 60% increase in Black, Asian and Native American representation, aligned with other community outreach efforts for the Northwest Room and produced materials which can drive future grant work for the institution.
