Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Adults with Autism

This workshop focuses on adapting cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to the unique needs of adults with autism. We will review key features of autism, diagnostic and referral considerations, core elements of effective CBT, and specific areas of focus to enhance your work with adults with autism. We will discuss diagnostic features of autism spectrum disorder and key areas of impairment. We will also discuss the core aspects of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), including theoretical and research foundations. We will discuss the importance of a collaborative, validating approach, enhancing motivation and rapport, developing an effective case conceptualization for each client, and when/why to collaborate with other providers and community resources.

Objectives include:
1. Participants will understand essential features of adult autism and how it presents in clinical settings.
2. Participants will identify key diagnostic considerations for adults with autism, including referring for additional evaluation and services.
3. Participants will summarize the defining aspects of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
4. Participants will develop effective cognitive and behavioral interventions for their work with adults with autism.

  • Dr. Kerrie Smedley

    Dr. Smedley is the founder and owner of Annville Psychological Services. She is a licensed psychologist specializing in helping children, teens, and adults with anxiety, stress, OCD, and autism. Her clinical education and experience have involved extensive training in cognitive behavior therapy, a powerful evidence-based treatment demonstrated to lead to significant improvement for a wide range of problems. Her professional work has been wide ranging, and includes providing therapy, psychological evaluations, college teaching, training other therapists, and publishing research in psychology. She is a Beck Institute CBT Certified Clinician, a faculty member at Beck Institute, and provides training and consultation in cognitive behavior therapy.
