08.04.2022 | Cracking Me Up: Petrographers' Insight on Concrete Cracking

Concrete cracks. It's a fact of life. The uncertainty and challenges lay in determining the reason why a concrete structure or element has cracked.

In this course, WJE petrographers Daniela Mauro and Karla Salahshour will discuss common causes of concrete crack formation and will share case studies from their own experience that highlight a range of conditions, including cracks that appeared to be structurally significant when observed in the field but were later determined through laboratory studies to be less severe. The presentation will examine crack aging, construction techniques to reduce some types of cracking, and uncommon deterioration mechanisms -- illustrated with field images and photomicrographs.

  • Course will award 1.5 hours of continuing education
