Mortality Surveillance and Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs

This course will cover some of the data-driven methods that are used to inform public health responses to the opioid overdose crisis. We will cover different data sources that health departments can utilize, with special attention given to overdose mortality surveillance and Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) data.

The learning objectives for this course are:

  • Identify different data sources that can be used to inform public health responses to the opioid overdose crisis.

  • Assess your agency's preparedness to conduct overdose mortality surveillance.

  • Understand the role of overdose mortality surveillance in describing shifts and inequities in the opioid overdose crisis.

  • Define PDMPs and their use in the context of public health surveillance.

  • Describe different types of analyses that can be conducted with PDMP data sets to inform interventions and reduce opioid-related morbidity and mortality.
