Description
Building and maintaining connection is essential in addictions treatment. This presentation will look at the development of attachment styles and the role this plays in substance use disorders. We will explore early object relations development and the unremembered assumptions that impact relationships and can lead to favoring substance use over intimate human connection. Lastly, we will look at using the client/clinician relationship itself to help a client move towards recovery, including goals, pitfalls, rupture and repair, transference and countertransference.
Learning Objectives
- Participants will be able to describe four instances where attachment informed approaches are important.
- Participants will be able to describe three impacts of implicit memory from early childhood.
- Participants will be able to learn at least two ways to discuss relapse in SUD counseling.

Maire Daugharty, MD, LAC, LPC, LMFT
Maire Daugharty, MD, LAC, LPC, LMFT, is a board certified anesthesiologist and a licensed addiction counselor and psychotherapist. In addition to her practice in anesthesia, she teaches addiction counseling coursework, facilitates substance use disorder groups, and runs a private practice where she provides individual therapy for addiction, trauma, life transitions, and work life balance. With a keen interest in the intersection of medicine and mental health, Daugharty has presented on addiction and trauma related topics in medicine, and has co-presented at the ASGW on group work. Combining expertise in physiology and pharmacology with a particular interest in the therapeutic impact of connection in therapy, Daugharty brings a synergistic approach to treatment for substance use disorders.

- Upon completing the webinar, you will have access to the CE quiz within the course you are taking. Find the CE quiz and click “purchase.” NAADAC members will be prompted to register for the CE quiz for free, while non-members will be prompted to pay a $15 processing fee to access the quiz.
- A score of 80% or higher is required to pass the CE quiz and access your CE certificate. You have 10 opportunities to pass the quiz. If you are unable to pass the quiz in the allocated number of tries, then you must retake the course.
- Upon passing the CE quiz, you will be required to complete the survey evaluation for the course. Once that is completed, your CE certificate will be immediately available to print.
