According to SAMHSA, approximately one-half of new addiction professionals entering the workforce leave within their first 18 months. The difficulty in retaining workforce goes beyond the low pay, as only 12% of the workforce cite money as the reason for their job change. Instead, most people report that they leave their jobs due to their relationship with their supervisors. Learn retention efforts that work from professionals who make it work! Learn the tips that can help you!
Cynthia Moreno Tuohy will give a brief overview of retention issues affecting the addiction workforce. A representative from the State of Washington will share a new initiative that will not only bring new professionals into the field, this new effort will sustain those effort and highlighting the WSU Behavioral Health Workforce Collaborative. Christina Chasak will share the retention tool kit developed by the State of Nebraska and implementing to increase the retention of addiction professionals. Matt Feehery, CEO of a large program in Texas, will share his methods in retaining the staff even in a competitive environment. Resources will be made available for participants, including a Retention Tool Kit and articles that point the way to successful practices.

Cynthia Moreno Tuohy
Cynthia Moreno Tuohy, NCAC II, CDC III, SAP, is the Executive Director of NAADAC. She previously served as the Project Director of Central East Addiction Technology Transfer Center. Moreno Tuohy was the Program Director for Volunteers of America Western Washington, serving homeless populations and the co-occurrence of poverty and substance use disorder issues. She has been the administrator of multi-county, publicly-funded alcohol/drug prevention/intervention/treatment centers. She has been an international, national and state trainer for over 25 years in a variety of topics. She has also served as President of NAADAC and has worked as a curriculum writer. Her book, Rein in Your Brain: from Impulsivity to Thoughtful Living in Recovery, was released in May 2014 by Hazelden Publishers. Moreno Tuohy holds a bachelor’s degree in social work and advanced studies degrees in social work and public administration.

Matt Feehery is CEO of Memorial Hermann Prevention & Recovery Center (PaRC) and Behavioral Health Services in Houston, Texas. He is a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC) and has worked in the addiction treatment field since 1979, serving as consultant and CEO for treatment organizations and hospitals throughout the country. Feehery joined Memorial Hermann PaRC in 2002 as CEO. He is Chairman of the Behavioral Health Services Council for the Texas Hospital Association (THA) and is an appointed member of the Behavioral Health Advisory Committee for the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC). He has served as President of Texas Association of Addiction Professionals (TAAP) and is Regional Vice President for NAADAC. Feehery is a native Houstonian and holds a MBA in Healthcare Management.

Jared Langton is the Recovery Youth Services Program Director for Washington State's Department of Social and Health Services, Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery. He holds degrees in chemical dependency professional studies and business management; along with a certified chemical dependency professional credential. Since entering the substance use disorder field approximately 10-years ago, Langton has worked across Washington State as a care team lead, primary counselor, program manager, clinical supervisor, clinical director and administrator. His focus and passion has been spent working with youth in outpatient and inpatient facilities, program development, and tribal health. In his spare time, Langton enjoys spending time with his 2-children, working on cars, riding motorcycles, the Seahawks, wood working and salmon fishing.

Chasek has been practicing mental health and drug counseling for over 15 years as licensed professional. She has experience in behavioral health care administration working as an Assistant Director in a University counseling center and as Program Director is a large community mental health center. Chasek’s philosophy of treatment style is based on the individual’s strengths, resiliency, and a positive therapeutic and teaching relationship. Chasek’s research and teaching interests are in addiction counseling and training preparation, counselor education, and clinical outcomes in counseling.
