Arterial Signal Timing Implementation, Evaluation, and Related Performance Measures

This webinar is led by ITE Traffic Engineering Council.

Webinar Description:

This webinar is one in a series related to the design and operation of signalized intersections. There is much material available on the development of signal timing patterns, including data collection, modeling, and optimization, but not much information exists on how to implement those timing parameters into the intersection controllers and the fine tuning needed to provide the optimum corridor operation.

This webinar will close that gap by discussing the best practices for implementing new timings, evaluating those timings through a fine tuning process and developing a before-and-after analysis, and a discussion of arterial performance measures that can be monitored to identify any degradation of the timing patterns. Attendees will learn how to update timing parameters through an Advanced Traffic Management System or through direct connection with a controller in the field using a laptop computer; how to review the initial timings in the field and make adjustments to fine tune the timings; and how to monitor a variety of performance measures to identify timing pattern degradation that may necessitate further adjustments.
.
Learning Objectives:
  • Understand the options available for implementing new signal timing parameters along a corridor, including using a centralized Advanced Traffic Management System, a direction connection to the controller using a laptop, and data entry through the controller's keyboard.
  • Recognize the steps of the fine tuning process, including an initial review to determine the developed patterns were correctly implemented and working as designed, then the follow up steps to fine tune the timings based on field performance reviews.
  • Recall the arterial performance measures that can help identify the need for further improvements in signal timing based on changing traffic conditions.
