Over a two-day series, this esteemed panel will present a business plan for starting and growing a business in the rehabilitation profession. They will share personal experiences, trials and tribulations of their individual businesses. Starting with the decision making of the IRS designation for a startup, they will address accounting, marketing, hiring (1099 vs W-2 employees), benefits management and IT (and AI) components of a business, while also emphasizing the need for professional consistency and ethical business practices.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Identify the nuts and bolts of starting a business, from the pre-opening decisions to be made, to creating a 5 year business plan.
Describe the critical elements required to grow and maintain a business, from cash management to professional delivery of services.
Determine the importance of honesty, consistency and character in preserving a growing business, from an IRS perspective to the customer impact.

Gill Spruance has been a practicing rehabilitation counselor in Florida since 1979. He currently does Life Care Planning and vocational analysis in in cases.
Reg Gibbs, MS

Reg has been CEO of Rocky Mountain Rehab, P.C., Billings, Montana since 2000. He holds a bachelors degree in Psychology from Eastern Montana College and a masters in Rehabilitation Counseling from State University-Billings.
Steven Yuhas M.Ed., CRC, CLCP, NCC, CCM, CBIS

Steve Yuhas has provided catastrophic case management and consultation services since 1985, certifying in Life Care Planning in 1995. He is the recipient of the 2018 IARP Lifetime Achievement Award for Distinguished Services and Commitment to the Rehabilitation Profession and 2018 FLCPR’s Cheryl L. Jasper Memorial Recognition Award. He is active in several organizations, and has served as past president of IARP, and past chair of IALCP. He currently serves on the FLCPRR Board of Directors, member at large.
Amy MacKenzie, PhD, RN, CLCP, CC

Amy has been President of MacKenzie Life Care Planning, LLC since 2018 and was President of Synergy Life Care before that. She has a background in Nursing having achieved her PhD in Nursing with a specialization in Traumatic Brain Injury Survivors.
Dr. Rick Robinson Ph.D., MBA, LMHC, CRC, CVE, NCC, CLCP, D-ABVE

is the President of Robinson Work Rehabilitation Services in Jacksonville, FL. He has provided vocational rehabilitation and disability consulting services in litigated and non-litigated settings since 1997. In addition to his private practice related to career planning for persons with vocational impairments, he has also been retained in several thousand forensically oriented matters involving vocational and disability litigation in civil and administrative settings. Dr. Robinson is nationally certified in rehabilitation counseling (CRC), vocational evaluation (CVE), and life care planning (CLCP). He is board certified by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NCC) and has been conferred Diplomate status by the American Board of Vocational Experts (D-ABVE). He is state licensed in Florida as a Mental Health Counselor (LMHC). He completed his doctoral work (Ph.D.) in Rehabilitation Science at the University of Florida. His research and publishing interests are related to forensic vocational rehabilitation assessment models and methodologies. He has published over a dozen peer reviewed articles and book chapters related to vocational rehabilitation services, and is a frequent lecturer both domestically and internationally on topics related to the field of vocational rehabilitation, life care planning, and work life expectancy. He is the editor of the 2014 textbook Foundations of Forensic Vocational Rehabilitation, which has emerged as a leading professional resource for practicing vocational rehabilitation consultants and students. He has held appointment as the lead faculty instructor for the University of Florida’s, post graduate certificate program in Forensic Vocational Rehabilitation. He is the immediate Past International President of the International Association of Rehabilitation Professionals.
