Webinar: Dentistry in Unstable and Humanitarian Crisis Environments

This webinar aims to discuss the distinctive challenges confronted by dentists operating in unstable environments and humanitarian crises. Through open discussions, we will shed light on the increased prevalence of oral health conditions and disparities encountered in these regions. While outlining the obstacles faced by dental professionals, including limited resources, complex dental needs, infrastructure deficiencies, and safety concerns - with a view of considering solutions. We would like this session to cultivate networks of research and support to address these challenges.
The session will feature dentists and dental researchers actively engaged or collaborating to promote the provision of oral healthcare or research in these environments.

Our panel comprises experts working across various regions currently grappling with such crises, including Sudan, the Middle East, Latin America and other areas.

Through this session, we will provide a platform for populations affected by humanitarian crises and empower dentists to be consider with the hope for a meaningful change in those challenging circumstances.

  • Elham Kateeb

    FDI

    Dr. Elham Kateeb is an Associate Professor of Dental Public Health at the College of Dentistry, Al-Quds University. She currently serves as the elected Chair of the Public Health Committee of the International Dental Federation (FDI). Dr. Kateeb has been the Dean of Scientific Research at Al-Quds University since 2017 and the Co-Chair of the Palestine Chapter of the Organization for Women in Science (OWSD) since 2020. In August 2023, Dr. Kateeb became the president of IADR-Palestine chapter after successful establishment of the Palestinian section of the International Association of Dental Research IADR. In addition, Dr. Kateeb currently is the co-chair of Sustainable Health Equity Movement (SHEM) and the immediate chair of the Academic Network of Development Dialogue.

  • Khaleda Zaheer

    King's College London, Refugee Crisis Foundation

    Khaleda is a dentist, CEO and co-founder of Refugee Crisis Foundation which is an international humanitarian organisation delivering locally-led, innovative and sustainable oral healthcare services to refugees. Her organisation has been designing, integrating, and evaluating oral healthcare initiatives for the Rohingya refugees in the world’s largest refugee camp in Bangladesh and the impoverished host community. Khaleda works in partnership with including UNHCR, the World Health Organisation, FDI, governmental entities, local non-governmental organisations, and academic partners.

  • Victor Barrios Rodriquez

    IADR Venezuelan Division

    Dr. Victor Daniel Barrios Rodriguez is a General Dentist from Universidad Central de Venezuela and he is currently pursuing a postgraduate specialization in Prosthodontics at Universidad Intercontinental Mexico. He has conducted research studies on dental caries, population needs, community inequities, and periodontal health in rural communities and indigenous communities in Venezuela since 2017, and is actively involved in sharing his knowledge as a speaker on oral health topics and conducting courses on dental caries prevention and treatment. In addition, Victor is a board member of the Venezuelan Division of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) and plays a key role in coordinating division events.

  • Maisa Elfadul

    University of Medical Sciences and Technology (UMST), Sudan

    Dr. Maisa Elfadul is a dedicated Sudanese public health specialist committed to improve health outcomes for vulnerable populations in low-resource settings. With over 12 years of experience as a health system analyst, Dr. Elfadul has specialized in program evaluation, epidemiological surveys, and humanitarian aid interventions. She has spearheaded numerous national surveys and evaluations, covering critical areas such as sexual and reproductive health, primary health care, gender-based violence, refugee and migrant health, COVID-19, and human rights.

    Dr. Elfadul's expertise has been sought by prestigious international organizations, including WHO, UNFPA, GAVI, the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT), Mott MacDonald, the Royal Society for Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (RSMTH-UK), the Agency of Italian Cooperation (AICs), EMPHNET, and the Arab Network for Non-Governmental Organizations for Development (ANND).

  • Kristina Wanyonyi- Kay

    THIS Institute, University of Cambridge

    Kristina is Research Programme Leader and Senior Research Associate at The Healthcare Improvement Studies (THIS) Institute, University of Cambridge where she leads research on learning health systems for healthcare improvement She has a degree in Dental Surgery from the University of Nairobi, a Master’s in Public Health from the University of Dundee and a PhD in health services research and population health from King’s College London. Kristina is a member of the Health and Science Committee of the British Dental Association and President of the Global Oral Health Inequalities Network of IADR

    Kristina’s research interests are in improving effectiveness and efficiency in health services and addressing health inequalities.
