Session Description
The unique features of stage IV periodontitis, due to the sequalae of the diseases, including masticatory dysfunction, occlusal collapse, pathological tooth migration, etc. require an inter-disciplinary approach to treat periodontitis and to restore/rehabilitate the impaired dentition/function. Furthermore, restoration of the edentulous areas is desirable, especially in elderly populations, to improve the masticatory function and nutrition. This symposium will critically review the available evidence on the management of stage IV periodontitis. In this context, indications will be provided to clinicians based on the S3-level Clinical Practice Guideline, recently developed by the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP). Future perspectives for research will also be discussed.

Learning Objectives
  • To critically review the current limitations and challenges associated with treatment of periodontitis stage IV (a,b,c)
  • To present the rationale and the current evidence behind the treatment of stage IV periodontitis, particularly the aspects related with the interdisciplinary treatment (a,b,c,d)
  • To discuss the S3-level EFP treatment guideline on the treatment of periodontitis in stage IV, and the future perspectives on its interdisciplinary care with an eye towards personalized medicine and overall wellbeing (a,d)
