2023 IADR/LAR General Session with WCPD

The 2023 IADR/LAR General Session & Exhibition with WCPD provided dental, oral, and craniofacial health scientists with the opportunity to present, discuss, and critique their latest and most cutting-edge research at a 100% in-person gathering in Bogotá, Colombia. The meeting was attended by 1,667 individuals from 76 countries.

The recordings in this library from the meeting are a selection of the science that was presented at the General Session. Session Description
Despite the significant improvement in quality of dental treatment and associated outcomes across patients’ life span, there is still a massive inequality in access to and provision of oral health care for people with disabilities. To address this, there is a need to expose dental students to the management of these patients during their training and therefore be skilled in meeting the needs of their local population. Such training should involve interdisciplinary care of allied health professionals for patients with special care needs so that we are able to raise quality of care for all patients.
The International Association for Disability and Oral Health (iADH) has completed the development of undergraduate curriculum guidance in SCD through a consensus process. The curriculum in SCD is defined in statements of learning outcomes with many of the skills being transferable across the undergraduate course (Dougall et al, 2014).
The aim of this symposia is to present the iADH SCD curricula and how this has been implemented and evaluated by early adopters around the world through case study presentations. From the lessons learnt we will also present strategy on how the SCD curricula may be implemented in your own school using a customized approach allowing the possibility of a phased introduction to facilitate uptake and impact. Interactive discussion and engagement will be made between global and regional organizations to see how the SCD curricula can be promoted and implemented around the world with considerations how a SCD MOOC could be used to facilitate this.

Learning Objectives
  • To understand the principles and practice of SCD curricula as designed by IADH
  • To learn from and understand the impact of case studies of the implementation of the SCD curricula by early adopters
  • To consider customization and strategy for implementation of SCD into your curricula.
  • To explore strategies to promote and implement SCD globally.
