Session Description
Effectiveness of biofeedback has been demonstrated for therapeutic management of systemic diseases such as dyssynergia, stress, anxiety, and chronic pain. However, potentials of biofeedback therapy for dentistry still remains unknown. Recently, the rapid improvement on portable devices that can record oral-related parameters has enabled researchers in the field of dentistry to easily utilize them in clinical settings. Application of the portable devices in randomized clinical trials, measuring oral behavior in patients with bruxism has demonstrated that biofeedback therapy using some kinds of stimulation is effective in the management of masticatory muscle activities during sleep. Consequently, these findings have suggested biofeedback therapy has the potential to contribute to the management of oral diseases. This symposium aims to introduce the use of biofeedback therapy in dentistry, types of stimulation in the biofeedback therapy, and the application of biofeedback therapy for clinical situations in the future.

  • Effect of daytime biofeedback on sleep bruxism
    The sleep bruxism regulation by daytime clenching control using a single-channel auditory electromyography biofeedback (EMG BF) device is introduced. Since the EMG BF during the daytime contributes to regulating EMG events during sleep, these results can help to understand the relation between awake bruxism and sleep bruxism.
  • Does intensity matter??
    Biofeedback is one of the effective management options for bruxism. The inhibitory effect of contingent electrical stimulation (CES) on bruxism episodes has been proven in probable bruxers. Throughout this talk, a series of studies on how the difference in the CES intensity exhibited the inhibitory effect on bruxism episodes will be explained for a deep understanding of sleep bruxism management.
  • Biofeedback and bruxism: the challenges for everyday management
    Some methods of biofeedback for bruxism management as inhibitory effect of contingent electrical stimulation (CES) will be introduced. How biofeedback technology can be transposed from science to clinical practice, including aspects related to the challenges in accessibility, usability, comfort, engagement and user experience of biofeedback in everyday use will be discussed.
