2023 IADR/LAR General Session with WCPD

The 2023 IADR/LAR General Session & Exhibition with WCPD provided dental, oral, and craniofacial health scientists with the opportunity to present, discuss, and critique their latest and most cutting-edge research at a 100% in-person gathering in Bogotá, Colombia. The meeting was attended by 1,667 individuals from 76 countries.

The recordings in this library from the meeting are a selection of the science that was presented at the General Session. These recordings give you the opportunity to participate in the meeting and hear from leading researchers. The recordings include IADR Distinguished Lecture Series speakers and symposia from a collection of scientific groups and networks.

This session can be purchased as part of the full meeting recordings within the product bundles

Session Description
Racism is often described as a phenomenon unique to the United States, however, racism and specifically anti-Black racism is a global phenomenon that impacts people who are Black in their identity, individuals with darker skin who may not be considered Black, and those individuals who are non-Black but harbor these feelings. Whether in the oral health outcomes of Black people in the southern United States, Brazil, Indigenous Australians, and comparing any African countries to non-African countries, oral health reflects the impacts of anti-Black racism. Beyond health outcomes, workforce trends, specifically the lack of Black dentists and Black oral health researchers, the ways in which racism is misused in research, and the perpetuation of anti-Black stereotypes have found their way into our education, practice, and research. Negative beliefs around Blackness, Black-adjacency, and Black proximity are present in oral health. How will oral health rid itself of these feelings and how can oral health justice be achieved? We propose an anti-Black racism agenda for dental research to include implications for dental education and clinical practice that can re-center Black people in research, be responsive to particular histories and practices of racism, and prepare a future workforce equipped to be leaders for oral health justice around the world. Peeling back the layers and examining every marginalized community, those who are Black or have Black proximity in marginalized communities experience the most severe forms of subjugation. Within every culture and society in the world, Blackness, Black-adjacency, or Black proximity leads to adverse outcomes.
