2023 IADR/LAR General Session with WCPD

The 2023 IADR/LAR General Session & Exhibition with WCPD provided dental, oral, and craniofacial health scientists with the opportunity to present, discuss, and critique their latest and most cutting-edge research at a 100% in-person gathering in Bogotá, Colombia. The meeting was attended by 1,667 individuals from 76 countries.

The recordings in this library from the meeting are a selection of the science that was presented at the General Session. These recordings give you the opportunity to participate in the meeting and hear from leading researchers. The recordings include IADR Distinguished Lecture Series speakers and symposia from a collection of scientific groups and networks.

This session can be purchased as part of the full meeting recordings within the product bundles

Session Description
Oral diseases are the among the most prevalent diseases globally, carrying significant quality of life and economic burdens. Current oral health care systems are not designed to address this burden, with large elements of population excluded from basic care and inappropriate use of resources resulting in large inequalities. “Westernised models” of dentistry are highly focussed on complex treatments and rely on expensive technology, with an increasing move to more aesthetic treatments. In LMICs, limited resources and infrastructure mean that basic needs cannot be met for much of the population. In all settings, coverage is often limited leaving deprived and vulnerable groups with higher care needs unable to access the care they need. Defining coverage, re-designing and re-orienting oral health services are complex systems problems in which research-policy gaps and research-practice gaps keep triggering inertia and inaction instead of addressing the persistent, albeit largely preventable, burden of oral diseases.

This symposium will describe this complex problem and address potential solutions linking research, policy and politics. The symposium will draw on real world examples of innovations across Europe, Canada and Burkina Faso, covering a broad range of settings with different issues and solutions. The role of policy research and health economics methods in defining coverage, designing and evaluating innovations to systems and aiding implementation will be illustrated.

Learning Objectives
  • By the end of the session participants will be able to describe the current complex systems problem of inadequate oral health systems
  • By the end of the session participants will be able to explore potential avenues for research to be applied to oral health system innovation and evaluation
  • By the end of the session participants will be able to utilise real world examples to illustrate issues and solutions to health coverage and system re-design
