2023 IADR/LAR General Session with WCPD

The 2023 IADR/LAR General Session & Exhibition with WCPD provided dental, oral, and craniofacial health scientists with the opportunity to present, discuss, and critique their latest and most cutting-edge research at a 100% in-person gathering in Bogotá, Colombia. The meeting was attended by 1,667 individuals from 76 countries.

The recordings in this library from the meeting are a selection of the science that was presented at the General Session. These recordings give you the opportunity to participate in the meeting and hear from leading researchers. The recordings include IADR Distinguished Lecture Series speakers and symposia from a collection of scientific groups and networks.

This session can be purchased as part of the full meeting recordings within the product bundles

Session Description
For over seven decades, behavioral, epidemiologic, and health services research has been carried out to improve the oral health of individuals and populations. Throughout this period, such research within these three disciplines has increasingly converged in a synergistic manner to inform oral health surveillance, promotion, translational science, and workforce planning. Across this research, there have been significant advances in the application of social and psychological theory; study design and methodology; data analytic approaches; translation to interventions along the individual-to-population spectrum; and implementation of innovations, including as related to policy. While earlier behavioral, epidemiologic, and health services research often focused on individual oral health, the scope has broadened over the years to increase our understanding of the group-, community-, institution-, culture-, insurer/payor-, and policy-level determinants that support oral health promotion and access to care.

Transdisciplinary research has prompted investigators and clinicians to think differently about oral health, changing the narrative from a disease-and-treatment-only focus toward one that centers on health promotion, prevention, and management. Still, work remains. Among others, these developments have raised key questions about how best to maximize transdisciplinary efforts to advance the field, how best to train our workforce in these disciplines, and how to foster global collaborations to ensure reach and equity. To address these and related questions, this symposium will suggest ways forward by drawing on a synthesis of past and current behavioral, epidemiologic, and health services research for oral health as well as pressing gaps, challenges, and opportunities.

Learning Objectives
  • Identify major contributions of behavioral, epidemiologic, and health services research in overall health made over the last several decades.
  • Describe remaining challenges in global oral health that can be addressed by behavioral, epidemiologic, and health services research, with emphasis on health inequities and marginalized populations.
  • Outline suggestions for future work, including areas of emphasis for the training of new investigators in oral health-related behavioral, epidemiologic, and health services research as well as optimal resource allocation for the advancement of population oral health.
