Session Description
Dental caries and periodontal diseases are the most common oral diseases. These are non-communicable chronic diseases (NCCD) that affect individuals from all ages and may lead to tooth and bone loss. Both caries and periodontitis are biofilm mediated conditions that vary in terms of prevalence and severity according to geographic regions.

Latin America comprises several developing countries with populations with increasing socio-economic stress and health inequalities. The Latin American Oral Health Association (LAOHA) is a non-profit organization created in 2017 with the mission of seeking improvements in dental research and in oral health of the Latin American population through research and education.

LAOHA has gathered researchers and professionals from different parts of the world to produce two consensuses reports on the epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment of dental caries and periodontal diseases in Latin America and the Caribbean countries (LACC). The participants highlighted the importance of increasing awareness about the content of these consensuses among researchers and academicians in the dental field.

The aim of this symposium is to present the main results of both consensuses and promote discussion on how to improve oral health in Latin America through preventive and therapeutic approaches focusing simultaneously on dental caries and periodontal diseases.

Learning Objectives
  • Generate awareness among health-care professionals regarding an up-to-date revision of dental caries and periodontal disease in the Latin American Region.
  • Identify strategic alliances to implement the undergraduate teaching consensus of dental caries and periodontal disease.
  • Review the recommendations of the consensuses on periodontal diseases and caries in LACC to generate core strategic messages.
