Session Description
Recent innovations in practice and research have led to improved oral healthcare and oral health for the average person. However, this increase in standards has opened a gap in access and outcomes when compared to people with disabilities. In order to provide the evidence for techniques and interventions that ensure equivalent access and outcomes for people with disabilities, it is essential for researchers and clinicians to collaborate.

The aim of this symposium is to illustrate advances in dental research and person-centred-practice that are necessary to achieve the objectives of both the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities(UNCRPD) and those of the oral healthcare community. This symposium builds ties between research communities within IADR, who may engage with disability and inequality, and the greater disability focused research / clinical communities, represented by the International Association for Disability and Oral Health (iADH).

In this symposium, research in oral health for people with disabilities highlights problems and solutions in achieving the objectives of UNCRPD. Four presentations will be delivered to achieve this:

Learning Objectives
  • Discuss access to equitable treatment outcomes as a right for people with disabilities under UNCRPD
  • Consider dental research as a step in achieving UNCRPD objectives.
  • To debate a research agenda for seeking innovative solutions for everyone.
