Session Description
Hyposalivation is the condition of having reduced saliva secretion, which could be caused by several factors, such as medication use, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, autoimmune diseases, and infections. Hyposalivation can produce serious negative effects on the patient’s quality of life by increasing risk of oral infection, affecting dietary habits, nutritional status, speech, taste and tolerance to dental prosthesis. Although various therapeutic strategies for salivary gland hypofunction are available, there is no definitive treatment for patients with dry mouth related to radiation therapy or Sjogren’s syndrome. Due to the limitations of conventional pharmacologic treatments, acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine have been used as complementary or alternative therapy in the management of hyposalivation. This symposium will provide cutting-edge information on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with highlights of its use in hyposalivation treatment. Presentations will include “Brief overview of Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture on hyposalivation” and “Chinese herbal medicine in treatment of radiotherapy induced xerostomia”, as well as Chinese herbal medicine in treatment of immunological diseases with emphasis on Sjogren’s syndrome.

Learning Objectives
  • To gain overall insights in the role of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in treating hyposalivation and challenges related to TCM.
  • To introduce the therapeutic principle and effect of Chinese herbal medicine on hyposalivation.
  • To understand the effect and possible mechanism of traditional Chinese medicine to relieve hyposalivation especially for patients with Sjogren‘s syndrome and radiotherapy related hyposalivation.
