A fireside chat for public health professionals focused on culturally appropriate mental health program.
Katherine Catalano is the Deputy Director of the Center for
Climate, Health and Equity at the American Public Health Association. Katherine
is a communicator, strategic planner, and leader with almost a decade of
experience in climate policy, advocacy, and education across sectors and
audiences with a particular focus on centering justice, equity, diversity and
inclusion in every aspect of the climate movement. Katherine is passionate
about applying her skills and experience to affect change and bring
stakeholders together to advocate for climate justice and equitable health outcomes.
Debra Houry, MD, MPH, is the Chief Medical Officer and Deputy
Director for Program and Science at CDC. Most recently, she served as CDC’s
Acting Principal Deputy Director and prior to that Dr. Houry served for over 7
years as the Director of the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control.
Dr. Houry previously served as an associate professor at Emory University and
emergency physician at Grady Memorial Hospital. Dr. Houry received her MD and
MPH degrees from Tulane University and completed her residency training in emergency
medicine at Denver Health Medical Center.
Kevin Dedner, MPH, serves as founder and CEO of
Washington-D.C.-based Hurdle, which provides culturally intentional teletherapy
putting culture first so that everyone feels seen, heard, and understood. “The
Joy of the Disinherited: Essays on Oppression, Trauma and Black Mental Health”
is his first book. He currently serves as an Optum Clinical and Scientific
Advisory Council member. Kevin graduated from the University of Arkansas in
Fayetteville and has a Master of Public Health from Benedictine University in
Illinois.
Crystal Brandow, PhD, worked in the fields of behavioral and
community health for 15 years, including efforts related to children, youth,
and families; well-being and wellness; trauma, healing, and resilience;
identity, culture, and bias; and social justice. She is the founder of CLB
Strategies, LLC, and a Founding Member of the Society for Health Communication.
She is an APHA Mental Health Section 2022 awardee. She often collaborates with
other small, woman-owned, Black-owned businesses, and works as a consultant
with HumanKind Workshop and Inspired Vision, LLC.
Josh Matacotta, PsyD, MA, CAHIMS, trained as
a clinical psychologist with an emphasis on behavioral medicine & health
psychology. He is the Assistant Dean of Assessment & Strategic Initiatives
and Assistant Professor in the College of Health Sciences at Western University
of Health Sciences. He is an adjunct professor at the College of Osteopathic
Medicine of the Pacific and teaches part-time in the psychology department of
Pasadena City College. Professional service includes serving on the Board of
Directors at IBHRI and volunteering to support its internship program.
