About the Training
This session will include an examination of the disciplinary
process, including handling complaints, investigation procedures, hearings,
evidentiary standards, sanctions, and enforcement. Presenters will also discuss
physician impairment, the role of Physician Health Programs (PHPs), and the
roles and obligations of medical board members, including the role of public
members.
About the SpeakersPatricia King, MD, PhD, is a Past Chair (2018-19) and past member (2014-2020) of the FSMB Board of Directors and is the current Vice President of the FSMB Foundation. She was a member of the Vermont Board of Medical Practice from 2003 to 2015, serving as Chair 2010-2014, and recently was reappointed to the Vermont Board. Dr. King was the Chair of FSMB’s Workgroup on Education about Medical Regulation for Medical Students and Residents (2015-2019) and the Chair of FSMB’s Workgroup on Physician Sexual Misconduct (2018-20). Dr. King is also a current member of the NBME Board of Directors. She has been a member of both USMLE and NBME test development committees and served on the USMLE State Board Advisory Group. Dr. King is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine where she has been active in medical student teaching and curriculum development, receiving the LCOM inaugural award for Curriculum Innovation in 2020. She practices primary care internal medicine with the University of Vermont Medical Group. Dr. King earned her PhD in Physiology from Brown University and MD from the University of Vermont College of Medicine. She is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Thomas W. Mansfield, JD, began serving as the
Chief Executive Officer for the North Carolina Medical Board on June 1, 2023,
after 22 years as the Board’s Chief Legal Officer. As CEO he serves as the primary external face of the
Board; builds partnerships with stakeholders, including the public, other
governmental entities, the medical profession and healthcare systems; and
ensures that the organization is well-equipped to meet its mission to regulate
the practice of medicine for the “benefit and protection of the people of North
Carolina.” Mr. Mansfield is responsible for bringing visionary and strategic
leadership to all Board operations while ensuring financial stability,
adherence to the Board’s stated mission and values, and continued development
of a positive, supportive culture. Mr. Mansfield is a native of Raleigh, NC, where he
currently lives, and a graduate of North Carolina State University and the
UNC-Chapel Hill School of Law.
