More Than Verbal: Expanding Our Understanding of Memory

Description

Memory is a key component of working with grief and trauma. However, we too often focus strictly on verbal memories. Many circumstances can limit a client's ability or willingness to work with verbal memories. In these cases, we must expand our understanding of memory and how to work with it. In this workshop, we will take a deep dive into other types of memory informed by best practices such as EMDR, mindfulness, and grief counseling. We will also examine case studies to gain a real-world understanding of the populations that will benefit from alternate approaches. You will leave with a fuller understanding of what memories can be and ways to incorporate that knowledge into practice. The content will be heavily focused on incorporating concepts into practice with EMDR.

Objectives:
1, Define types of nonverbal memory.
2. Identify populations that benefit from focusing on nonverbal memory.
3. Learn strategies to incorporate nonverbal memory into treatment.
