Program Overview

This intermediate level course for mental health professionals will provide information about each step involved in referring for and conducting comprehensive psychological assessments for children, teens, and young adults. Topics include: identifying signs of learning differences and differential diagnoses (particularly trauma), how to conduct comprehensive assessments, facilitating feedback sessions, and collaborating with practitioners providing the interventions. Effective interventions for neurodevelopmental differences and how to integrate them into therapy will be discussed, with a focus on brain-based and relational/co-regulation strategies. Case examples of clients with learning differences and giftedness will be presented and information about neurodiversity and affirmative language will be provided.

Learning Objectives
  1. Describe neurodiversity and the clinical and ethical implications of utilizing neurodiversity affirming language and care.
  2. Explain key elements of a psychological assessment including ethical and cultural considerations, as well as how to differentiate between trauma and neuro-developmental differences.
  3. Discuss how to facilitate successful collaboration between assessment clinicians and intervention practitioners.

About the Presenters
Daniel Franklin, PhD is the author of Helping Your Child with Language-Based Learning Disabilities (2018). He holds a master’s degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a PhD from UCLA. Daniel has over 30 years of experience in education as a teacher, school administrator, and educational consultant. He is the founder of Los Angeles-based Franklin Educational Services.

Ashley Taylor, PsyD is the Executive Director and founder of Wonder Tree Developmental Psychology. She is a licensed clinical psychologist in both Washington State and California. She conducts comprehensive trauma-informed pediatric evaluations, leads a team of highly specialized psychologists, and provides training, consultation, and supervision through a reflective and relational lens. Dr. Taylor is a co- author of two interdisciplinary books for educators, and endorsed in California as an infant-family and early childhood mental health specialist.
