As our society advances, reductionist thinking abounds. In many aspects of life, reductionism is helpful, but when applied to people, usually not so good. Sadly, people are often reduced to a diagnosis, and because of our impatient microwave mindset, a medication is prescribed to bring immediate comfort and cure. But the human race is a complex being, made in God’s image, and can’t be reduced to a bag of chromosomes, circuits, neurotransmitters, and easy levers to fix the glitches. A 2022 study tackling a mega review of the literature stated serotonin is not implicated in depression, while a study released later in Oct 2022 showed lower serotonin activity in depressed patients and resurrected the Serotonin Hypothesis for depression. Reductionism has its role, but ultimately, we need to put all the pieces back together to form and address the whole mind in the whole person. Thus, an integrated spirit, mind, body view is essential, and the best way to integrate is by going to the Best Instruction Book for Living Everyday given to us by the Creator of our mind. Dr. Karl will pull back the curtain to share practical psychiatric and spiritual insights he’s learned and applied over 35 years of studying and prescribing psychiatric medications. and how he positions them with the many patients he’s blessed to have been invited by God to be part of their transformational journey. You will then understand the role of psych meds to be more accurate and compassionately communicate well to patients or those you minister to facilitate their healing journey.

List of Learning Objectives:
  • Discuss important stats about how many people in the US are taking psych medications.
  • Describe the role of patients and the role of psychiatric medications.
  • Discuss when to refer patients for medication evaluation.
  • Describe how to position psych meds synergistically in a spirit, mind, body model of human functioning.
