Although Aristotle was famously mistaken regarding science, concerning his metaphysics of biology, he has a lot to offer modern medicine. When philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre became a Thomist, he naturally adopted Aristotle's ethics, but he was less enthusiastic about his 'metaphysical biology.' He has learned to appreciate metaphysical biology as well. In this talk Cory Wilson, MD will explore Aristotle's metaphysical biology, particularly as it pertains to the views of a growing number of contemporary biologists. Emphasis will be placed on the view expressed by Brian Goodwin in How the Leopard Changed its Spots: The Evolution of Complexity. Properly understanding these issues will help physicians properly understand the nature of human persons/patients. He will also explore the intersection of these ideas with theology and the doctrine of the Image of God in human beings.
