Recent and Proposed Changes to Actuarial Standards

Actuarial Standards of Practice evolve. Two veterans of the Professionalism Education Working Group will present two ASOPs with recently adopted revisions.
ASOP 36 Statements of Actuarial Opinion Regarding Property/Casualty Loss, Loss Adjustment Expense, or Other Reserves will be effective Oct 1, 2024.
ASOP 29 Expense Provisions for Prospective Property/Casualty Risk Transfer and Risk Retention effective July 1, 2024.
In addition, we will talk through the process for adopting and revising ASOPs and visit other ASOPs currently being reviewed

Learning Objectives:

  1. Recall the main issues that triggered revisions to ASOP 36 and 29.
  2. Refer efficiently to the revised standards.
  3. Understand the revision process for ASOPs.

CAS Continuing Education Policy
The CAS Continuing Education Policy applies to all ACAS and FCAS members who provide Actuarial Services. Actuarial Services are defined in the CAS Code of Professional Conduct as “professional services provided to a Principal by an individual acting in the capacity of an actuary. Such services include the rendering of advice, recommendations, findings or opinions based upon actuarial considerations.” Members who are or could be subject to the continuing education requirements of a national actuarial organization can meet the requirements of the CAS Continuing Education Policy by satisfying the continuing education requirements established by a national actuarial organization recognized by the Policy. For further information regarding the CAS Continuing Education Policy please visit the CAS web site.

CAS Webinars may qualify for up to 1.8* CE Credits for CAS members.
Participants should claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. CAS members earn 1 CE Credit per 50 minutes of educational session time, not to include breaks and/or lunch. *The amount of CE credit that can be earned for participating in this activity must be assessed by the individual attendee. It also may be different for individuals who are subject to the requirements of organizations other than the Casualty Actuarial Society.

  • Todd Hess

    Todd Hess, FCAS and MAAA, is the Head P&C Transactions and Referrals for Swiss Re and is based outside of Los Angeles. Todd has held a wide variety of actuarial, underwriting, and executive roles. He has been close to Structured Reinsurance and Large Transactions for most of his 41-year career. In his current role he offers risk management advice on the company's largest P&C reinsurance deal prospects. Todd is a member of the Professionalism Education Working Group.

  • Esther Becker

    Esther Becker is a Partner in Becker-Garland Actuarial, where she and Roberta Garland serve a number of predominantly self-insured corporations as property and casualty reserving actuaries. Esther has 30 years of actuarial and insurance experience, both as a corporate and consulting actuary, and underwriter. She recently served as Chair of the CAS Professionalism Education Working Group, frequently facilitates professionalism education sessions like this one, and leads the subcommittee on ASOP reviews for the CAS.
