Property & Casualty rating factors have recently come under intense scrutiny by consumer advocates and regulators, alike. This is part of a broader focus in the United States on the potential impacts of societal systemic bias across many industries. Understanding the sources of these concerns and how other financial services sectors have attempted to identify and address racial bias may provide a foundation for the insurance industry to move forward.

This session will provide an overview of two new research briefs commissioned as part of the Casualty Actuarial Society's Approach to Race and Insurance Pricing:

  • Understanding Potential Influences of Racial Bias on P&C Insurance: Four Rating Factors Explored
  • Approaches to Address Racial Bias in Financial Services: Lessons for the Insurance Industry

Learning Objectives:
  1. Examine public concerns regarding the relationship between select P&C rating factors and historical events practices
  2. Explore solutions to address racial bias implemented in the financial services sector.
  3. Discuss the applicability of such approaches to in insurance pricing and related practices.

CAS Continuing Education Policy
The CAS Continuing Education Policy applies to all ACAS and FCAS members who provide Actuarial Services. Actuarial Services are defined in the CAS Code of Professional Conduct as “professional services provided to a Principal by an individual acting in the capacity of an actuary. Such services include the rendering of advice, recommendations, findings or opinions based upon actuarial considerations.” Members who are or could be subject to the continuing education requirements of a national actuarial organization can meet the requirements of the CAS Continuing Education Policy by satisfying the continuing education requirements established by a national actuarial organization recognized by the Policy. For further information regarding the CAS Continuing Education Policy please visit the CAS web site.

CAS Webinars may qualify for up to 1.8* CE Credits for CAS members.
Participants should claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. CAS members earn 1 CE Credit per 50 minutes of educational session time, not to include breaks and/or lunch. *The amount of CE credit that can be earned for participating in this activity must be assessed by the individual attendee. It also may be different for individuals who are subject to the requirements of organizations other than the Casualty Actuarial Society.

  • Robin Harbage

    Robin Harbage is an insurance industry expert with more than 30 years experience as a chief actuary, insurance product manager, and general manager overseeing pricing, marketing, and product development across multiple states for top tier insurance carriers. As a director at Willis Towers Watson, he developed and launched successful insurance programs for more than 60 carriers. Retired in 2017, he now provides independent consultation and advice. Opinions expressed in this article are his own.

  • Cherie Dill

    Cherie is a Fellow of the CAS and is currently VP, Actuary at Everest Reinsurance where she is head of the Bermuda Actuarial function. Cherie has a BS in Mathematics from Bennett College and a MSc. In Actuarial Science from Temple University.

  • Mallika Bender

    Mallika Bender is a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society. Her thirteen years in the Property & Casualty industry reflect a wide range of experiences, across pricing, reserving and modeling, from Personal to Commercial and Specialty lines, in the United States and Australia. Mallika leads Inclusion, Equity and Diversity efforts for the CAS and is the Co-Chair of the CAS / SOA Joint Committee for Inclusion, Equity and Diversity.
