Is Decarbonization a never-ending game of "Whack-a-Mole?"

The pursuit of reducing carbon emissions has become a never-ending game of "whack-a-mole," where one solution to carbon reduction is implemented, only to reveal another source of emissions that needs to be tackled. As we strive to achieve net-zero carbon emissions, it is becoming increasingly clear that amultifaceted approach is necessary. This presentation will explore the various carbon reduction strategies that have been implemented, the unintended consequences that have arisen, and the ongoing challenge of balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability. The conclusion suggests that a comprehensive, adaptive, and collaborative approach is required to effectively address the complex and interconnected issues of carbon reduction. In this presentation, we will explore the new ENERGY STAR NextGen certification for commercial buildings, highlighting its key features and benefits. We will also discuss the steps building owners and managers can take to prepare for NextGen certification, including optimizing building systems, engaging occupants, and implementing sustainable technologies.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Identify and locate data sources needed to achieve net-zero carbon emission projects.
  2. Establish carbon emission goals that reflect the realistic consequences of selecting specificĀ building systems.
  3. Target the elements of a project design that have the greatest impact on carbon emissions.
  4. Recognize the capabilities of Energy Star Portfolio Manager as a carbon emissions tracking tool.
