Better Light Than Never: New Updates to IES LP-8, The Commissioning Standard for Lighting and Lighting Control Systems

The Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) is the definitive authority on professional practices relating to lighting engineering and lighting practices. In early 2024, the IES will release a revised edition of their Lighting Practice document, LP-8, the Commissioning Process Applied to Lighting and Lighting Control Systems. This ANSI-accredited standard is the culmination of a concerted effort to update the standard by commissioning providers, lighting designers, lighting control specifiers, researchers, and manufacturers to reflect better the scope of services required for commissioning modern lighting systems – including LED luminaires and networked lighting controls. Beyond modernizing the technologies covered in the standards, the revision team also dramatically expanded the standard to cover existing building commissioning, automated fault detection and diagnostics, lighting commissioning for smaller projects, and better enumerate the topics that may be discussed in the OPR and BOD. In this session, you will be provided a sneak peek into the revisions incorporated in the LP-8, including all of the topics above, and provide additional case studies from the team’s professional practices, highlighting why these changes were necessary and timely.
Learning Objectives:
  1. Define the role LP-8 fills within the standard commissioning practices identified by ASHRAE, the BCxA, and others.
  2. Use LP-8 to define better the commissioning scope of services and value offered to the building owners and operators.
  3. Provide New Construction commissioning services that ensure the delivery of functional, efficient, and high-quality lighting and lighting control systems using the new appendix content in LP-8.
  4. Apply LP-8 to the Existing Building Commissioning project to identify, troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve lighting-related findings.
