Description
This webinar is intended to both
familiarize the AZA community with the role of the Molecular SAG and to present
recent examples where molecular data have been used to inform population
management (SSPs, reintroduction programs, etc.). Have questions about using
genomic data to improve the management of a population? Curious about how
to get started? Just want to know more about what the SAG might
be able to do for you? Come learn more and get your questions answered!
Agenda:
- Molecular SAG overview – roles and
function
- Molecular SAG highlights
-Guest speakers whose recent genomic work
has been used to inform population management:
-Asako Chaille, MS, - San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance –
Insights and Best Practices: Using genomic data to estimate kinship in four AZA
bird populations.
-Emily Humble, PhD – University of Edinburgh –
Comparing inbreeding
of scimitar-horned oryx in managed (SSP/EEP) versus un-managed populations.
-Elora López-Nandam, PhD - California Academy of Sciences –
Kinship and
genetic variation in aquarium-spawned corals.
-Klaus-Peter Koepfli, PhD - Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation
Biology Institute & George Mason University–
Understanding
the genetic causes of decreased reproductive fitness in the endangered
black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes) using genomic tools.
-Question and Answer Session
