VI-AAC-20: Communication, Connection, & Consent: AAC Vocabulary Access for Sexual Health

Overview

How do we improve AAC user outcomes for sexual health, intimacy, and relationships? Attendees will learn to apply sex education standards to AAC vocabulary selection and implementation. During this session, the AAC learners, users, and allies will be encouraged to participate in an open dialogue to further examine and challenge the AAC practice status quo regarding sexual health-related topics and concepts.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe at least three recommended sex education standards and what vocabulary AAC users need to access that standard.
  2. Develop at least two rationales to support access to sexual health, intimacy, and/or relationship vocabulary for AAC users.
  3. Recommend three or more examples of sexual health, and/or relationship vocabulary to in AAC systems/device for each life-stage.

Biography

Hali Strickler is an AAC Services Coordinator for TechOWL at the Institute on Disabilities at Temple University. Her work at TechOWL includes providing AAC supports and services to individuals with complex communication needs throughout Pennsylvania. She received both her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Speech, Language, and Hearing Science from Temple University. Hali is a licensed (in Pennsylvania and New Jersey) and ASHA (the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association) certified speech-language pathologist with experience in public schools and adult community-based settings. Throughout her career, Hali has developed a passion for assistive technology and AAC. She has spoken at national and statewide conferences and has been a featured guest on several disability advocacy podcasts.
