CR-ATPAP-53: Writing Success for Students with CNN and Complex Physical Needs

Overview
Children with significant motor, cognitive and communication challenges are often not able to write or produce meaningful content. OT’s and SLP’s are in an ideal position to provide an interdisciplinary approach to implement adaptive writing strategies so that our complex students can experience greater success in writing. This will be an interactive session, covering all methods of writing production, strategies for instruction, data collection and access to a writing tools database.

Learning Objectives

  1. Define describe at least four types of alternate composition methods for writing and when they may be appropriate to use with students.
  2. Provide at least three benefits of occupational and speech therapy collaboration to support writing for students with complex communication needs.
  3. Plan at least two new ways to integrate meaningful writing into work with your students/clients.

Heidi L. Rabe, M.A., CCC-SLP/L is a Speech-Language Pathologist with 20 years of experience working with children and adults with a variety of complex communication challenges and specializes in AAC. Heidi has presented nationally and internationally on topics related to AAC and has worked in a variety of private and educational settings. She started Authentic Expression, LLC in 2016 and currently provides individual therapy to clients and Assistive Technology Coaching to school districts. Heidi received discounted registration and is a member of ASHA special interest group and online communities.

Cassie Frost
Disruptive Teaching
Cassie Frost has been in the special education field for thirteen years, teaching in environments including a residential treatment facility, alternative school and the public school system. She has specialized in students who struggle with emotional and behavioral disabilities, autism, and behaviors resulting from learning disabilities. Cassie has extensive experience utilizing technology to engage students, providing access to educational materials, and creating interactive and positive learning environments. Additionally she has spent three years focusing specifically on Assistive Technology to make learning available to all students. Cassie holds a Masters degree in Education and has been a presenter at state level and national level Special Education, Technology, and Assistive Technology Conferences including ATIA, Closing the Gap, and ISTE.
