This webinar will provide an overview of sustainability-related trends, practices and resources in departments that utilize medical imaging equipment. We intend for the discussion to empower technologists and therapists to contribute in their own way, in their own departments or to simply learn more about the topic. The panel includes an academic medical physicist, academic radiologist and a technologist-turned-industry.

Objectives
After this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Learn about the “why” of sustainability, especially related to radiology
  • Understand the benefits of sustainability and how increased efficiencies help patients, the planet and departmental finances
  • Discuss trends, process improvement ideas and operational strategies related to sustainability

  • Andrew M. Hernandez, Ph.D.

    Andrew M. Hernandez, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Radiology in the Department of Radiology and Division of Medical Physics at UC Davis Health. He also serves as the Director of Radiology Sustainability and the Chair of the Radiology Sustainability Subcommittee. In his leadership roles within sustainability, he helps advocate for, support logistically and provide resources for sustainability initiatives in imaging. The primary focus of his research efforts is the quantification of energy consumption for medical imaging equipment, including implementation and dissemination of strategies for energy savings.

  • Reed A. Omary, M.D., M.S.

    Reed A. Omary, MD, MS is the Carol D. & Henry P. Pendergrass Professor of Radiology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. After serving as Chair of Radiology at Vanderbilt from 2012 to 2023, he pivoted his career to focus on sustainable health care. He founded a sustainable healthcare blog called The Green Leap, as well as Greenwell Project, a nonprofit organization seeking to design sustainable medicine together with patients.

  • Amy King, B.S., CNMT

    Amy King is the Sustainability Lead for Bracco Diagnostics. She’s also Bracco’s Manhattan Territory Account Manager and has over 20 years of clinical, commercial and advisory experience in the life sciences industry. For over a decade, Amy worked as a nuclear medicine and PET/CT technologist at the VA Hospital. She has traveled extensively back and forth to Haiti, volunteering for various social impact initiatives since 2007; these travels sparked her long-time commitment to sustainability.
