A Practical Guide to Taxonomy

In this session, two experienced taxonomists will share tools and techniques for designing a taxonomy that meets your real-world needs. You will also take part in an exercise that applies these methods in a structured group activity. At the end of this session you will be able to demonstrate taxonomy to your stakeholders in terms they can understand, determine the best data collection strategy to build and populate your taxonomy, and build a governance workflow to make it sustainable over time.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this session, you will be able to:

  1. Lead an interactive exercise with your stakeholders to demonstrate what taxonomy is in terms they can understand
  2. Develop a strategic approach to collecting the data needed to build a taxonomy through an analysis of essential types of facets or term sets and the best strategy for each one
  3. Determine the best approach to translating the taxonomy that's been built on paper into the systems that will use it, whether through folder structures, tags, or semantic relationships
  4. Establish roles and workflows to govern the taxonomy over time
