The scope of this technical report is designed to provide educational information for the management of electronic messages, some of which are identified as records, which ARMA International defines as “Any recorded information, regardless of medium or characteristics, made or received and retained by an organization in pursuance of legal obligations or in the transaction of business.” It does not address electronic messaging platforms within the context of social media.

The purpose of this technical report is to provide guidance for organizations that are developing policies for managing electronic messages. It contains guidance that will be useful throughout the information lifecycle—from creation to final disposition—and supports the implementation of effective information governance.

Its appendices include suggested provisions of an electronic messaging policy, an annotated list of applicable standards, and a bibliography.
