Opportunities for Developing ACGME Rural Track Programs

In 2019, the ACGME Board of Directors approved an accreditation framework for medically underserved areas and populations (MUA/P). The framework goal is to expand GME into rural and underserved areas and ultimately enhance access to and availability of healthcare in MUA/Ps, consistent with the ACGME’s mission to improve health care and population health. In this session, the ACGME’s Director of MUA/P and GME and SVP of Osteopathic Accreditation will provide an overview of this framework and introduce early MUA/P initiatives, including the ACGME Rural Track Program designation.

Learning Objectives

  1. Upon completion, participants will be able to discuss factors contributing to the development of a new accreditation framework.
  2. Upon completion, participants will be able to explain the sections of the ACGME’s accreditation framework for medically underserved areas and populations.
  3. Upon completion, participants will be able to articulate the ACGME Rural Track Program designation processes.
