Rapid Rounds 1 - Want to "Head" off the Pain? Updates in Migraine Care
No more headaches trying to figure out all the latest and greatest when it comes to migraine treatment! This rapid round session will cover the most up-to-date treatment options for migraines. A review of clinical scenarios where imaging is indicated will also be included.

Learning Objectives

  • Apply the current theories on the pathophysiology of migraine to understand how medications can effectively treat migraines
  • Categorize preventive and acute options of migraine treatment
  • Identify the clinical scenarios where brain imaging is recommended, utilizing the most up-to-date version of the American College of Radiology Appropriateness Criteria

Rapid Rounds 2 - STI Updates: Quick Info for Problems (Mostly) Down Below
This 20-minute discussion will cover a quick approach to addressing sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the clinical environment, from asking a sexual history to testing and treatment. We'll cover new updates from the last two years so that physicians feel comfortable addressing for patients with these uncomfortable—literally and metaphorically—conditions.

Learning Objectives
  • Identify the "Five Ps" approach to getting a sexual history
  • Review essential elements related to identification, diagnosis and treatment of four common STIs (gonorrhea, chlamydia, trichomoniasis and human papillomavirus)
  • Identify considerations for special populations (e.g., pregnancy, high-risk behavior)

Rapid Rounds 3 - The Bearer of Bad News: A Plan to Organize the Difficult Conversation
By building long-term, multigenerational relationships with patients and families, family physicians often find themselves the bearer of bad or serious news. While often difficult for the physician, the skillful delivery of bad news can provide comfort for the patient and family. The SPIKES protocol (Setting, Perception, Invitation, Knowledge, Emotion, and Strategy & Summary) is an acronym to help guide the physician in the delivery of bad news.

Learning Objectives
  • Defining PIMs (Potentially Inappropriate Medications) and the Burden of Adverse Events on the patient and healthcare system
  • Defining the BEERS criteria and the benefits and pitfalls of it's use
  • A review of the BEERS criteria in comparison to the other available PIM identification tools
