Title IX and Graduate Medical Education

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in any educational program or activity receiving federal financial assistance. While many may have familiarity with Title IX with respect to campus sexual violence or equity in athletics, this federal civil rights law covers so much more, including its application to medical residency programs. This session will provide an introduction to Title IX and its ever-evolving landscape, an overview of the new 2020 Title IX Final Rule, and what these developments mean for residents and residency programs.

1. Discuss Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and its continuous evolution
2. Understand Title IX's application to graduate medical education and the rights and responsibilities required by the 2020 Title IX Final Rule
