Teaching Old Dogs (and young pups) New Tricks! Leveraging Faculty Development in Osteopathic Principles and Practice for Allopathic Faculty

Residents selecting osteopathic-focused graduate medical education rank "learning to integrate osteopathic manipulative therapy (OMT) into practice", "learning OMT billing and coding" and "maintaining OMT hands-on skills" as extremely or very important in previous studies. Engaging allopathic faculty in professional development in osteopathic principles and practice (OPP) reduces barriers to osteopathic learning by expanding the number of preceptors whom osteopathic residents can approach with fundamental questions regarding application, documentation or coding/billing of OMT. This session describes one family medicine residency's experience with annual professional development of its allopathic faculty in OPP through a variety of learning formats over five years and assesses its impact on osteopathic residents educational and clinical experience of OPP, using a Plan-Do-Study-Act cycle to improve patient outcomes related to OMT in resident continuity clinics.

Learning Objectives
1. Understand barriers osteopathic residents may face in learning OPP in a residency with osteopathic recognition.
2. Describe multiple formats for professional development of allopathic faculty in osteopathic principles and practice.
3. Understand how allopathic faculty can support osteopathic resident progression through Osteopathic Recognition Milestones.
