Creating an Osteopathic Curriculum for the Future of Osteopathy

As a family medicine residency approved by the Osteopathic Recognition Committee since 2017, we have created a comprehensive osteopathic training program. In this session we will provide details on our 18 month rotating osteopathic curriculum. The goals of the curriculum are to: 1) address barriers to providing osteopathic treatment, 2) improve resident skills and confidence, 3) stress preventive osteopathy, and 4) foster ongoing review of the literature on OMT. The presentation will include a description of the activities (such as monthly workshops) we employ to reach the four goals, including the use of the flipped classroom, as well as small group formats. We will also discuss the relevant documentation requirements and the methods we use to train residents to appropriately code and bill their OMT visits.

Learning Objectives

  • Appreciate the benefit of a focus on preventive treatment and begin utilizing preventive outlook with their in the education of osteopathic learners (as well as their own patients).
  • Construct a similar curriculum in their own residency program.
  • Incorporate point of service literature review as an important part of osteopathic training.
  • Experience working in small group format to foster learner engagement.
