Incorporating OPP into Family Medicine Didactic Education Curriculum

Osteopathic Recognition Requirements state : "Programs must: Provide residents with instruction in the application of OPP; embed the four tenets of osteopathic medicine into the educational program; provide structured didactic activities that integrate OPP." (OR requirements IV.A.1-3) We propose a multifaceted approach to fulfill these requirements including: dedicated OMT lectures routinely integrated into didactic curriculum for all family medicine residents (MD and DO), Practical clinical experience through DIrect Observation at OMT clinics, OPP faculty development for all faculty so that allopathic faculty have a clear understanding of OPP. However, this still takes OPP and separates it from standard teaching. In order to make OPP an integral part of education, we propose a system of including OPP into all family medicine didactics regardless of if an MD or DO is presenting. This allows residents to integrate OPP into their assessment and plans for all family medicine complaints.
