Long COVID and Aquatic Therapy: Is it a Safe and Appropriate Modality?

Summary of the Course:
Long COVID is a condition that can cause severe limitations in all aspects of life. This discussion spends time looking at how the pool should or shouldn’t be utilized for this population.
Learning Objectives:
  • Understand the pathology of Long COVID in regard to the energy systems and how this applies to physical therapy
  • Understand the importance of assessing for Post Exertional Malaise to create appropriate goals and treatment strategies
  • Discuss aquatic therapy and its role in these patients’ return to activity or improved quality of life

Statement of Relativity to Physical Therapy

Long COVID has many faces and symptoms. Physical therapy can be beneficial in all aspects of the disease – from pacing to re-introducing exercise. However, we just need to be cognoscente of how exercise is tolerated in the body.

Instructor:
Courtney Matrunick, PT, DPT is an Aquatic and Neurologic Physical Therapist working in the outpatient neurologic rehabilitation clinic for UNC Health. She is a graduate of the Doctorate of Physical Therapy program at Elon University. She has been a Physical Therapist for 18 years with a specialty interest in Spinal Cord Injury, Wheelchair Seating and Positioning, Aquatic Therapy and Long COVID. She has had the privilege of working both in the inpatient rehab and outpatient rehab settings. She has been involved in the UNC Health COVID Recovery Clinic from its inception, helping to provide support, advocation and healing for those dealing with the effects of Long COVID.
