Course Description:

The shoulder is a complex joint that relies on muscle balance for stability and functional use of the upper extremity. The aquatic environment is ideal for rehabilitation of various shoulder injuries and post-op recovery. This course will focus on review of various shoulder pathologies, combining current research with clinical pearls linking key points to land and aquatic protocols to assist the aquatic therapist in the clinical decision-making process in patients with shoulder pathology. Practical application will be presented through video demonstration of aquatic exercises and progression to improve thoracic mobility, postural control and strength of the upper quadrant and shoulder complex.

Course Objectives:
  • Apply clinical reasoning skills to choose the most appropriate aquatic based shoulder exercises based on individual clinical findings, impairments and stage of tissue healing.
  • Document medical necessity for the use of aquatic interventions in your plan of care.
  • Design an aquatic based treatment program that is safe and effective for individuals post total shoulder and rotator cuff repair.

Instructor:

Beth Scalone, PT, DPT, OCS is a physical therapist specializing in orthopedic and aquatic therapy, and owner of North County Water & Sports Therapy Center in San Diego. Beth earned her PT degree from the University of Connecticut and earned her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Boston University. She has achieved Certification and re-certification as a clinical specialist in orthopedic physical therapy and is a certified STOTT Pilatesâ„¢ instructor. Beth is an Aquatic Therapy Rehabilitation Institute Certified therapist. In 2010, Beth was honored with Aquatic Therapy Rehabilitation Institute's Tsunami Spirit award for her contribution to aquatic therapy education. In 2012 she was named Aquatic Therapy Professional of the year. In 2015 the Aquatic Section of the APTA presented Beth with the Judy Cirullo Ward in recognition of her promotion of aquatic therapy. Additional aquatic therapy certifications include, Master Instructor for the Burdenko Method and Trainer for AquaStretchâ„¢ Beth has a passion for education and the ability to motivate and facilitate professional growth and lifelong learning among physical therapy students and graduates. Applying evidence-based material to daily clinical treatment presenting courses across the country and worldwide.
