Navigating the Allergy Journey: Using AAHA's Management of Allergic Skin Diseases in Dogs and Cats Guidelines 


Cases involving a pruritic cat or dog can be complex and frustrating for both the pet owner and the clinician. The purpose of this course is to highlight the key points of the newly released 2023 Management of Allergic Skin Diseases in Dogs and Cats Guidelines in efforts to streamline the diagnostic process and discuss evidence-based treatment recommendations. We will review the many detailed tables and figures, including how to effectively use them in clinical practice. In addition, other key features involved in allergy management will be discussed including utilizing veterinary technicians during the diagnostic work-up, understanding the importance of client communication, as well as discussing the spectrum of care inclusion.

  • Summarize the tables and figures which detail the diagnostic work-up and treatment options for the allergic dog and cat, in addition to learning how to implement them in clinical practice.
  • Discuss the vital role of veterinary technicians in the management of allergic patients.
  • Understand the key communication strategies with owners of allergic dogs and cats.
  • Understand the options within the spectrum of care for allergic dogs and cats.
  • Discuss the main criteria for referring an allergic dog or cat to a board-certified dermatologist.
