Description

ICE Block I
ICE Block I is the reincarnation of the historic ice manufacturing facility which was destroyed by fire on the same site. The new four-story structure is an elegant blend of architecture and structural features, and now hosts retail and restaurant tenants on the concrete first floor, with office tenants occupying the exposed heavy timber second through fourth floors. The presentation will focus on the structural integration of the heavy timber, concrete podium, and steel buckling restrained braced frame lateral system.

Presented by: Ryan Miler, Buehler

Casa Adelante - Delivering Affordable Seismic Resilience
The Mar Structural Design team was immediately moved to make Casa Adelante structurally special when learning that the building would be 100% affordable, serving low-income seniors, and with 25% of the units set aside for formerly homeless seniors. We set out to make the nine-story reinforced-concrete apartment building seismically resilient to protect an economically vulnerable population who likely would have very limited resources. We had no illusions that there would be “extra” money from the non-profit developers for improved seismic performance. The reality is that more affordable housing is much more important than better seismically performing housing in the San Francisco Bay Area. With this as context and constraint, we challenged ourselves to create affordable seismic resilience.
